Poolpod, the pool lift set to arrive in time for the 2016 Olympics

The London 2012 Olympics’ delivery committee had launched an international competition to find a pool lift to suit their needs, in terms of functionality and accessibility. Poolpod products, a creative industrial design company based in Glasgow UK, aced the competition with their design of a submersible platform lift with an amphibious wheelchair!

This lift enables swimmers who find ladders unsuitable, to access pools easily. One can enter standing, or make use of the wheelchair for entry and exit. The sturdy mechanical design and the pivot action of the lift makes dependable and quick! It uses rechargeable batteries, eliminating the need for wiring at the poolside, and 50 users can get in and out on a fully charged battery. The Poolpod can be operated using proximity wristbands to control the ascent and descent functions. It can be used from the poolside as well as in water, and it also controls the depth to which the lift submerges. The Poolpod lift can sustain a maximum load of 250 kilograms; it allows either 2 people, or 1 person on the wheelchair to enter at a time.

Existing can be retrofitted with the Poolpod lifts, and is the obvious pick for state of the art pools such as Aszaha Hadid’s London aquatics center and toll cross international swimming center, which is Glasgow’s commonwealth games competition pool.

Josh Reid, the designer and founder of Poolpod, didn’t launch it during the 2012 Olympics, since some of the components were reacting with the pool’s additive chemicals. The revised edition of the Poolpod has now been scheduled for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro Brazil.
